Ingredients

Scale

Potato Mixture

  • 2 cups mashed potatoes (cooled)
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons chopped parsley (optional)

Coating

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs (beaten)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)

For Frying

  • Vegetable oil (for deep frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Potato Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooled mashed potatoes, grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, egg, salt, black pepper, and chopped parsley if using. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Shape the Potato Balls: Using about 1 tablespoon of the mixture per portion, roll the mixture into small balls. Continue until the entire mixture is used.
  3. Set Up the Coating Stations: Arrange three shallow bowls with flour, beaten eggs, and breadcrumbs respectively.
  4. Coat the Potato Balls: Roll each potato ball first in flour, then dip into the beaten eggs, and finally coat thoroughly with breadcrumbs. Place the coated balls on a plate and set aside.
  5. Heat the Oil: Pour about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep pan or skillet and heat it to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the Potato Balls: Carefully add the potato balls in batches to the hot oil. Fry, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy on all sides, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
  7. Drain Excess Oil: Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried potato balls and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  8. Serve: Arrange the Parmesan Garlic Potato Balls on a serving platter. Optionally garnish with extra Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Use chilled mashed potatoes for easier shaping.
  • Double-coat the potato balls in flour, egg, and breadcrumbs for an extra crispy crust.
  • Season the breadcrumbs with herbs or spices for added flavor.
  • Test oil temperature with a small piece of bread; it should sizzle immediately when ready.
  • Can be baked or air fried as an alternative cooking method.
  • Freeze uncooked coated balls on a tray before transferring to a freezer bag for longer storage. Fry from frozen when ready to cook.
